Introduction

Think about the team you lead or work with and ask yourself the following two questions: How safe is it to speak up? How clear and high are the standards?

The response to these questions places a team within one of four possible environments.

The Safety and Standards Matrix is a visual grid that helps organizations evaluate and where the standards and the psychological safety of the team sit.

A graph showing four boxes in the middle. The Y axis shows the Standards ranging from 'High' at the top of the axis, to 'Low' at the bottom. The X axis then has 'Psychological Safety' from 'Low' to the left and then 'High' to the right.

This creates four boxes referred to as 'zones'.

Strategic Benefits for Teams and Leaders

  • Balances Accountability with Empathy: Using this matrix dispels the myth that psychological safety meaning ‘going easy’ on people. It proves that high expectations and a supportive, safe environment must coexist to unlock performance.
  • Acts as a Diagnostic Health Check: It provides a simple, shared vocabulary. In a world of jargon or vague language like ‘low morale’, teams can pinpoint exactly where they sit.
  • Prevents Costly Blind Spots: By highlighting elements like the Anxiety Zone, it warns leaders that high performance is driven purely by fear and that is unsustainable. It exposes how fear leads to hidden mistakes, compliance over creativity and eventually, burnout!
