Students and graduates at Northumbria University are to benefit from financial backing for a new business incubator and Enterprise Club.

A three-year package of support has been pledged by the not-for-profit Agile Business Consortium for the university’s Innovation Northumbria: Incubator, a purpose-built facility in Newcastle providing space and support to help students and graduates nurture, develop and launch their own start-up companies.

The university is also launching The Enterprise Club, a network of business mentors sharing their own knowledge, experience and expertise, and The Enterprise Fund which will provide vital funding to help develop student ideas and start-ups.

As part of its campaign to create Generation Agile, the Agile Business Consortium has committed to support The Enterprise Fund through a £5,000 a year donation for the next three years.

It has also pledged £3,000 a year for the next three years to provide student prizes and scholarship support.

Emily Ruffle, Head of Insights at the Agile Business Consortium, said that the Consortium is keen to work more closely with universities in terms of their teaching, research, and support for innovation, and this was the start of a positive relationship with Northumbria University.

Emily said: “This new incubator and Enterprise Fund is an excellent initiative by Northumbria University. It will help create a new generation of students and young entrepreneurs, fully prepared for the modern world of business, where agility is the key to growth and success – Generation Agile.

“Education providers need to support the development of young people with the right mindset to be able to compete and survive in a constantly shifting world. This project will help give students in the North East – and from the university’s other campuses in London and Amsterdam – a solid foundation from which to build their own agile businesses.

“We are sure this marks the start of a long and positive relationship with Northumbria University.”

Thanking the Agile Business Consortium for its support, Lucy Winskell OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Employability and Partnerships at Northumbria said: “We have big ambitions to help inspire more people in more ways to take on the challenges of tomorrow.

“With the help of valued partners such as the Agile Business Consortium, we continue to support our staff, students and alumni by investing in world-class research, education and facilities.

“This support from the Consortium is helping us put plans into place to make a real difference for our students for many years to come.”

The backing for the Northumbria project follows the Agile Business Consortium’s work with the universities of Kingston, Greenwich and Westminster to introduce an Agile Practices module designed to equip graduates with a foundation of agile knowledge as they enter the workplace.
