2 minutes with Kathy Berkidge

1). How did you come to agile/business agility?
Back in 2005, I was working as a BA with a medium sized telco company in Melbourne who was re-designing their website. The requirements were being put together in the usual, non-agile way. After months of many meetings and a lot of documentation, the specification was still not signed off. The business was getting frustrated at the lack of momentum. So, the I.T. manager came in one morning and called a meeting, announcing, ‘We’re going to deliver this website using agile”. From there, we tried a number of different things without really knowing what we were doing and had some trying times. Slowly, we learned more about the practices and how to work together and deliver iteratively and incrementally. That was my first official agile project. However, back in 1994/95, I was a software developer using a method called ‘Rapid Application Development’ (RAD), the predecessor to DSDM.

2). What's your current job title?
Agile Coach & Trainer | Mindfulness Teacher | Speaker (phew what a mouthful – but I do a lot of different things)

3). What do you actually do?
Work with organisations and individuals to help them learn about agile, implement agile ways of working and be more agile, not just do agile. I’m very passionate about the relationship between the agile mindset and mindfulness and facilitate ‘Mindful Agile’ workshops as well.

4). How have you pushed agile through your organization?
Well, I work for myself. However when I’m working with others, I seek feedback, constantly looking for ways to deliver more value and implement improvements, as well as timebox and prioritise my own work.

5). What's the biggest issue you see in your community at the moment?

Confusion about the different agile approaches and how to scale agile beyond I.T.

6). Recommended book?
I am a book-a-holic, so trying to recommend one book is too hard. ‘The Art of Happiness’ by His Holiness the Dalai Lama is perhaps the one that I read and refer to the most.
