Monthly spotlight on Abi Walker
4 May 2019
Each month we will be interviewing a member of the Agile Business Consortium community. For May's spotlight interview, we have the Consortium's Head of Content, Abi Walker.
How long have you been working for Agile Business Consortium? I have been at the Consortium since August last year, so 9 months – it feels like longer!
What's your current job title? Head of Content
How would you describe your role to a child? I get to be creative – come up with cool stories, make fun pictures, keep our website looking fresh and share exciting ideas with the team!
Before working at the consortium, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had? The most unusual job I had was when I was involved in the rehabilitation of the first-hand reared colobus monkey. My role was to act as a surrogate mum and basically teach her how to be a monkey. I would spend hours each day encouraging her to climb trees, interact with the wild troop and forage for the right foods. A past role that I found particularly interesting was when I was an electric vehicle specialist in the motor industry, as I enjoyed educating businesses on the benefits of electric vehicles.
What’s the first thing you do when you start the workday? Each morning I wake early to walk my English springer spaniel, Rowan. I’m not a morning person at all so he really helps to wake me up before my drive to the office. Once I’m at the office, I will always check the social media platforms that I manage first, before going on to check my emails, and prioritise my tasks for the day.
What Agile techniques do you use in your day to day life? I use a few, and I didn’t realise how agile I worked until I started working at the Consortium. My favourite agile tool is Trello – and I would like to thank my colleague, Tamsin, for introducing me to this! Trello works like a Kanban board, and it’s perfect for managing multiple projects. I also use Trello as a content planner for our social platforms.
What do you enjoy doing out of work? If I’m not walking my dog or renovating my house with my partner, James, then I’ll most likely be visiting tea shops, travelling up north to see my family or attending a pole fitness class.
Tell us a random fact about you? I’m not sure if it’s that random, but I’m originally from a small village between Sheffield and the Peak District, and I have been living in Kent for 6 years now - still haven’t lost the northern accent though…
What is your motto or personal mantra? I love inspirational quotes, so much so I have an Instagram account devoted to them. This one is my favourite; “whatever is good for your soul, do that”
Recommended book? The Secret by Rhonda Byrne - I recommend this book to so many people, because the law of attraction is such a great thing. Plus, I find it works when I need a parking space.
